It usually contains these conventions:
- shadowing from blinds etc.
- smokiness - from cigarettes or cigars
- neon (street) lights
- femme fetale
- when women are first seen, they are usually partially dressed in order to portray the idea of lust and temptation. - contains a crime
- rainy streets
- urban setting
- dark interior
- voice over from the main character
Femme fetale is usually a sexy, appealing woman who uses her beauty to catch a male characters eye (usually the detective) and then they try to kill them or purposely disrupt what they are doing in a negative way. "femme fetale" is french for fatal female, which portrays a negative attitude towards the character as we are portrayed a negative image of death.
