Film Noir

Film Noir is a genre of film.
It usually contains these conventions:
  • shadowing from blinds etc.
  • smokiness - from cigarettes or cigars
  • neon (street) lights
  • femme fetale
    - when women are first seen, they are usually partially dressed in order to portray the idea of lust and temptation.
  • contains a crime
  • rainy streets
  • urban setting
  • dark interior
  • voice over from the main character

Femme fetale is usually a sexy, appealing woman who uses her beauty to catch a male characters eye (usually the detective) and then they try to kill them or purposely disrupt what they are doing in a negative way. "femme fetale" is french for fatal female, which portrays a negative attitude towards the character as we are portrayed a negative image of death.
